MK1 Golf / Jetta / Caddy / Scirocco WELD-IN VR6 12v & 24v Engine and 02M Gearbox Mounts

You may be wondering why we offer a weld-in VR6 kit for the MK1?

Well we have been fitting VR6's into MK1s for over 20 years now and the original VW mounts do not lend themselves very well, for fitting any of the VR6 engine variants!

Benefits of the weld-in kit:

1. Offers 5 mounting points for these heavy engines, including 2 at the weakest point, which is the front crossmember. The bolt-in kit only offers 1 mounting point here! And if you know these front crossmembers, they barely cope with a 1.8 4 cylinder, let alone the torque and weight or the VR.

2. With this kit, you can use the custom length 02M MK1 driveshafts that we sell with the 108mm inner CV's. With the bolt-in kit you will need other costly custom length driveshafts, which exaggerates the the problems associated with unequal lengths.

3. The gearbox remains in its most natural position as per any 4 cylinder conversion. With the bolt-in option (and depending on your ride height/wheel/tyre combo) the tyre can fail the end of the gearbox when turning, due to the whole engine and gearbox being pushed over the the left of the chassis. This positioning also causes issues with clearance between the servo/brake master cylinder!

Benefits of a Bolt-in kit over the Weld-in:

1. Relatively straight forward for a beginner or for someone who doesn't weld.

So what involved in fitting the weld-in kit?

Its not as bad as you may think. The 3 gearbox mounts actually bolt in, giving you the correct position of the engine, so that you can then weld that last 2 engine mounts in. A little fettling may be required to the mounts as all chassis's are slightly different, but if you a fairly competent and can weld yo will soon work it out.

The original drivers side mount will need carefully cutting off of the chassis leg, and the right hand side chassis leg will need notching slightly (or beaten with a hammer) to clear the harmonic balancer/lower flywheel.

This kit will work on the following models:

MK1 Golf
MK1 Golf Cabrio
MK1 Caddy
MK1 Jetta
Scirocco 1 & 2
US built Rabbits & Pickups

To use this kit, you will also need the following bushes:

2x 357199402A
1x 171199214D
1x 171399151B

Supplied in a raw steel finish except for the gearbox mounts.

No fitting instructions are given, but we can offer advice.

Also Available as a 6 speed option elsewhere in our shop, along with just the engine mounts if you already have 02A or J fitted to your vehicle.
